Argument Agreement
Argument Agreement Example:
We, [Partner 1] and [Partner 2], agree to follow these guidelines during arguments to ensure that we handle disagreements with respect, understanding, and care for each other’s feelings and needs.
We will remain calm and respectful.
We agree to avoid yelling, name-calling, or using hurtful language.
We will take a deep breath and stay focused on resolving the issue rather than winning the argument.
We will listen actively.
We will listen to each other without interrupting.
We will acknowledge each other’s feelings and viewpoints, even if we don’t agree.
We will take breaks when needed.
If emotions become too intense, we will agree to take a timeout to cool down and regain perspective.
We will reconvene after the break and continue the conversation with a clearer mind.
We will stick to the issue at hand.
We will focus on resolving the current issue and avoid bringing up past grievances or unrelated issues.
We agree to address one issue at a time.
We will use “I” statements.
We will express our feelings by using "I" statements (e.g., "I feel..." or "I need...") to avoid sounding accusatory.
We will speak about our own feelings, rather than blaming the other person.
We will maintain physical and emotional safety.
We agree to avoid physical aggression of any kind.
We will respect each other’s boundaries and emotional needs.
We will aim for resolution, not victory.
Our goal is to reach an understanding or a compromise, not to "win" the argument.
We will focus on finding solutions that work for both of us.
We will respect timeouts and pauses.
If one of us asks for a timeout, we agree to respect the request and take a short break if necessary.
We will return to the conversation when we’re both ready to continue respectfully.
We will end on a positive note.
We will make an effort to end the conversation with kindness, and if possible, agree on a plan for moving forward.
We agree to show appreciation for each other and recognize the effort to communicate effectively.
